Luke 8:49-50 (NIV) – 49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
Jairus had a critically ill twelve year old daughter. He begged Jesus to come home and heal her. As they moved through the crowd, a message came to Jairus that her daughter had died and there is no need to bother Jesus.
Prayer is not bothering God. Jairus was not bothering Jesus. When the daughter was critically ill he needed Jesus. Now that the daughter is dead, does he still need Jesus? According to those who brought the report, Jairus didn’t need Jesus because death had occurred.
We need Jesus in good times and in bad times. We need Jesus when things are bad and when they get worse. Jairus needed Jesus much more at this point than even before the daughter died.
The message is that we need Jesus at all times. Under all circumstances we need Jesus. There is no situation where anyone can say you don’t need Jesus.
Do not limit God. A certain great writer puts it this way, “do not limit the holy one of Israel.” Do not say that I need God at this point and I don’t need Him at that other point. You need God all the time.
If you do not need God all the time, it could be because you think He can’t handle everything. Those who advised Jairus thought that Jesus can only heal the sick but He can’t raise the dead. Please know that God can do it all, handle it all and sort it all. Do not limit God!
If you do not need God all the time, it means you have other gods for other times. Religious syncretism. We need to be faithful to one God that we work with under all circumstances. Therefore when things are bad you need God. When things are getting worse, you still need God!
When Jairus is told that the daughter is dead, Jesus interjects immediately. Jesus tells him not to fear but only believe. At the worst of moments, do not fear, Just believe.
Faith must look at the reality that the daughter is dead and still believe that all shall be well. Faith by nature defies reality. Does your faith defy reality?
Your daughter is confirmed dead at is the reality. The appropriate natural response is to panic and give up. Jesus tells Jairus to ignore the reality. Just believe that your now dead daughter will be okay. Defy the reality of death and embrace faith in God. Faith defies reality!
Romans 4:19-21 (NIV) – 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead —since he was about a hundred years old —and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
Abraham faced reality of his old age and weak body, then defied that reality by believing that God will give them a child. Faith must defy reality. That is why he is the father of faith! His conviction defied the reality he was facing!
Look at your academic reality. What sad reality are you facing? Defy that reality by believing that God will bring good out of all these. Faith defies reality!
Faith defies reality by believing that God can change the impossible situation. Faith defies reality by believing that when God doesn’t respond as we expected, it shall still be well for He has a better alternative. On these two beliefs, faith moves forth to defy reality!
God will answer my prayer. If God doesn’t answer as I requested, He has a better plan than I was praying for. Therefore, I refuse to bow to the pressure of the reality. I defy that reality and entrust the outcome and the future into God’s hands. Your faith must defy reality!
We must believe in God and defy our realities. Believe in God and work on our failed relationships as if they still have a chance. Believe in God and apply for the job again. Believe in God and start that business. Believe in God and continue with treatment. Believe in God and face the exam. Believe in God and even walk on water. Faith must defy reality!
Your conviction that God will come through, must defy reality. May our faith defy all our realities to the glory of God. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
