Genesis 7:1 – The LORD then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
A generation is a group of people who were born and lived during the same period of time and almost share the same characteristics. The time given to a generation spans the period between when they are born until they become adults who raise their own children. A generation is anywhere between 25 to 40 years. Circumstances during their lifetime may also give them a unique identity.
A generation can be defined by major events that happen in their life time that affects them. An example is that the current generation has a more global outlook than previous generations. The world has become a global village and that affects them. Technological advancement and access of the internet world has an impact on the current generation who fully depend on these things compared to the other generations.
The following are some of the recent generations. “Generation X (circa 1965 to 1980) Millennial Generation (circa 1981 to 1996) Generation Z (circa 1997 to 2012) Generation Alpha (circa 2013 to 2022).” (Kagan, Julia et al, July 02, 2024, Generation X (Gen X): Between Baby Boomers and Millennials, Investopedia, https://www.investopedia.com/terms/g generation-x-genx.asp#:~:text=Generation%20X%20(circa%201965%20to,2013%20to%202022)56 , Retrived July 03, 2024)
There is a tendency to define people by their generation. Yet the scripture today tells us today that Noah was considered righteous by God because he was different from his generation. Therefore your generation is not your definition!
Your generation may have selfish tendencies of considering their welfare without caring about others. Selfishness is a vice. You do not have to be as selfish as your generation. Your generation is not your definition!
It is okay to be different from your generation. The current generations may be highly addicted to gadgets that connect them to the internet. Addiction is a vice. You do not have to be addicted as they are. It is okay to be different the way Noah was different from his generation. Your generation is not your definition!
You may be identified by some general characteristics of your generation, but the negative characteristics should not define you. Do not accept a blanket identity that may identify you with sinful rebellious anti religious ways. Noah was different from his generation. Your generation is not your definition!
John 17:16 – They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
We are in the world but we are not of this world. We belong to a generation by birth but we belong to God by salvation. Our identity is no longer our generation but our faith.
Romans 12:2 – Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.
God commands His people to be different from their generation. Do not be identified by your generation. Do not be proud of being like your generation. God commended Noah for being different from his generation. Your generation should not be your identity!
Your generation may be disrespectful but you are respectful. Your generation may be impatient but you are patient. Your generation may be violent but you are peaceful. Your generation may be abusive but you are not. God wants us to be like Noah who was different from his generation.
Isaiah 6:5 – “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”
Isaiah 6:6 – Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
Isaiah 6:7 – With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. ”
Isaiah lived in a generation of people with unclean lips. People who punctuate everything they say with abusive words with sexual connotations. People who would speak disrespectfully to people the age of their parents and use abusive words as a norm. People who do not want to be called out for use of insults. They love their insults and can’t guarantee that they will not use them. People with unclean lips! A generation of unclean lips!
God touched Isaiah and made him clean and different from his generation. Isaiah now had clean lips in a generation of unclean lips. God wants to touch you and make you different from your generation.
God wants to touch you and make you different from your generation. Your generation dresses poorly you dress well. Your generation are quick to divorce you maintain your marriage. Your generation are lazy workers who easily quit but you are hardworking and stay the course. Your generation has a blurred sense of holiness but you clearly distinguish the holy and the unholy. You are different from your generation!
Your generation are promiscuous but you are not. Your generation is raising children as single parents and proudly so, you raise your children with both parents because you know the terrible impact of an existing but absent parent. Your generation doesn’t love their wives nor submit to their husbands but you do so because God said it! Your generation are careless parents but you bring up your children with intention. You refuse to be identified by your generation. Noah was righteous because he didn’t identify with his generation!
Dear God forgive us for foolishly being proud of identifying with our wicked generation. Touch us and make us righteous and different from our generation. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
