Unless You Hate It and Detest It You Are In Great Risk

Deuteronomy 7:26 – Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and UTTERLY DETEST IT, for it is set apart for destruction.(NIV)

Deuteronomy 7:26  And don’t dare bring one of these abominations home or you’ll end up just like it, burned up as a holy destruction. No: It is forbidden! HATE IT. Abominate it. Destroy it and preserve God’s holiness. (Message Bible)

No one may like to be at risk. Being at risk means you are in danger of losing or being harmed. It’s good to avoid being at risk. The Bible today tells us that we can avoid risk by hating and detesting something.

God hates the enemies of Israel because they have defied Him for many years. God has resolved to destroy them. God will destroy them and remove them from Canaan and have His people Israel stay there.

Deuteronomy 7:22 – The LORD your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you.

Deuteronomy 7:23 – But the LORD your God will deliver them over to you, throwing them into great confusion until they are destroyed.

Deuteronomy 7:24 – He will give their kings into your hand, and you will wipe out their names from under heaven. No one will be able to stand up against you; you will destroy them.

Deuteronomy 7:25 – The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the LORD your God.

God tells Israelites that He will destroy their enemies little by little. God is able to destroy them all at once, but it will create a new and bigger problem for Israel. Therefore for their own good, God will destroy their enemies bit by bit.

Our prayers for delivery may take long to be answered. God may take long to deliver us because an instant complete delivery may usher in new and bigger problems. Therefore for our own good, God takes long to deliver us. For our own good delays the answers to prayer. If God had killed all enemies of Israel at once, the wild animals would move in and be a nuisance to Israel. Therefore for Israel’s own good, their enemies will take long to be eliminated. They will be eliminated bit by bit.

Do you have prayers that have taken long to be answered? Is God seemingly too slowly in granting your request? Is the recovery or solution taking too long to fully come? Our study today shows that the delay is in our best interests. May our faith remain strong during the delay.

These are you enemies. These are enemies of your God. They have defied God for years. God is fed up and has decided to destroy them. For your own good they will be destroyed little by little. As you wait for their destruction, you will see their wealth. You will see their gods. You will see their way of life. You will see how they run their politics. You will see their children being free to defy their parents and use abusive terminology. The solution therefore is to hate it and completely detest it. Unless you hate it and detest it you are in great risk!

As you wait for their total destruction, you will notice some beautiful and handsome people among them. Don’t get tempted. You will notice a few things you can learn from them, don’t adopt it. You will see their wealth and how they make it, don’t cover it. The solution therefore is to hate it and completely detest it. Unless you hate it and detest it you are in great risk!

As you wait for them to be completely destroyed, you may start interacting with them and start concluding that they are actually nice people. You may even question why God destroys them. You may start liking their type of economy. You may have things you want to borrow from their education system. God says if you do that, you will be like them and God will destroy you. The solution therefore is to hate it and completely detest it. Unless you hate it and detest it you are in great risk!

We have temptations around us. We have lived around sin and amidst sin for too long. The wise among us are now telling us about the usefulness of some tendencies from sin. Thought leaders are influencing us that evil practices are not very bad. God sends a warning that we too may be liable to punishment if we become like the evil world around us. The solution therefore is to hate it and completely detest it. Unless you hate it and detest it you are in great risk!

The unconverted people are handsome and beautiful. We rationalize that we can marry them. We even reason out that they are better than the boring converted people. We have lived with them so long that we forget that God plans to destroy them for they have rejected His calls. We too may get destroyed with them. The solution therefore is to hate it and completely detest it. Unless you hate it and detest it you are in great risk!

We have lived around sinful people for too long. We do weddings like them. We dance like them. Enjoy secular music like them. Without interpreting the Bible properly, we quickly convince ourselves that Jesus went to a wedding with wine and that David danced. We therefore adopt ways of the world on flimsy grounds. God warns that He will destroy us with the world around us. The solution therefore is to hate it and completely detest it. Unless you hate it and detest it you are in great risk!

We must hate the world and all its ways or else we will be destroyed with it. Hate it’s music. Hate its dressing. Hate its dancing. Hate its food. Hate its laws of power. Hate it’s handsome and beautiful people. Hate its philosophies. Hate its politics and political methods.

Active hating of the sinful ways of the world will help us distinguish between the holy and the profane. Without an active hate of sinful tendencies, we will be like the sinful world and God will destroy us. May God enable us to sustain this hatred of the sinful things of this world. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
