1 Kings 8:50 – And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have committed against you, and cause their captors to show them mercy;
King Solomon prays during the dedication of the temple. He prays about many things. The prayer reveals to us something about God and about the Israelites.
In the section of the prayer that we have cited today, Solomon asks God to forgive Israelites when they sin and come for repentance to the temple. Solomon pleads with God to forgive all the offences they have committed. It is good to ask for forgiveness of all sins, both known and unknown.
Then Solomon prays that incase Israelites are captured by enemies God should intervene. A captured person is a slave. A captured person can be tortured and abused. A captured person can be killed. A captured person is a hated person. Solomon asks God to cause the captors of Israel to show them mercy!
Even if they are full of hatred, God is able to cause them to show mercy. Even if they are sadists who enjoy seeing the suffering of others, God can cause them to show Israelites mercy. Solomon asks God to cause the captors of Israel to show them mercy!
Dear God cause the ruthless captor to show mercy. Dear God cause the merciless captor to have mercy on your people. Solomon believed that God could cause the heart of a captor to gently handle Israelites who were in captivity. Cause their captors to show them mercy!
Israelites will be in captivity because of sin. They deserve every mistreatment and even death. But when they pray towards the temple in faith to the God of heaven, Solomon pleads that God will cause their captors to show them mercy!
When we face the disciplinary action for mistakes we made, may the committee show mercy. When we are guilty as charged but remorseful and repentant, may God cause the decision makers to be merciful. Cause their captors to show mercy!
When envious and hateful people gather in secret or officially to make decisions that affect us, may God cause them to show mercy. We may deserve or not deserve, but may God cause them to show mercy. Cause their captors to show them mercy!
When we write examinations after doing our best and our mental ability is not necessarily the best, may God cause those who mark to see the intended point. When we seek God for help and ask for forgiveness, may God cause the examiners to show us mercy. Cause their captors to show them mercy!
We all need mercy at some point in life. We may beg someone to show us mercy and the more we beg the more they cause us to suffer, because they enjoy our suffering. We may deserve the suffering, but we are now repentant. May God cause our captors, so to speak, to show us mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
